United Nations Sends Aid to 10,000 Syrian Refugees Using Ethereum Blockchain

This aid initiative is seen as the most successful application using the Ethereum Blockchain.

The project, which was completed on May 31, was run by the United Nations’ World Food Programme. At the core of the project, encrypted receipts containing items would be produced and given to thousands of Syrian refugees.

The application was successfully used to record and verify the transfers of 10,000 people. The platform was implemented by Parity Technologies. Heading the initiative was Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood.

WFP innovation accelerator consultant, Alexandra Alden, who helped oversee the app, said:

“All funds received from WFP for refugees were used specifically to purchase food products such as olive oil, pasta and lentils.”

Expanding the Project

WFP plans to expand the project to 100,000 people in Jordan by early August. If this plan goes along, the project aims to serve the entire Jordanian refugee population by the end of 2018.
