Findings mentioned in the report ;
- As a result of our internet browsing, we detected middleboxes using deep data analysis (DPI) on Türk Telekom network. While hundreds of users in Turkey and Syria were trying to download legitimate Windows apps, these middleboxes were directed to government spyware.
- We found similar middleboxes under the jurisdiction of Telecom Egypt. Apparently, these middleboxes were used to en masse hijack the unencrypted network connections of Egyptian internet users and redirect users to revenue-generating content (anchored ads or cryptocurrency mining).
- After extensive research We matched the features of network injection in Turkey and Egypt with the features of Sandvine PacketLogic devices. First, we developed an injection fingerprint that we detected in Turkey, Syria and Egypt.. This fingerprint matched that of a hand-held PacketLogic device we purchased and measured in the lab. , raises serious copyright infringement concerns.
Reaching the Sadvine team regarding the issue, CoinDesk included Sandvine’s objection in its news;
“Looking at the initial reviews of the report, we can see that Citizen Lab’s conclusions are technically inaccurate and misleading.. We certainly do not have any technological or commercial affiliation with brokerage firms that directly or indirectly install malware. Even though our products show redirect feature, HTTP redirection is a technology that is widely accepted by all institutions, not just for us.”
Although the technical dimension of the findings on the subject is open to discussion, those mentioned in the report are George Orwell’s. It is also a fact that in 1984 pushed me to think about the “Big Brother” utopia.. Although the developing technology is constantly on the agenda with its positive sides, it seems that cyber security and the protection of personal rights will occupy a more important place in our lives in the coming periods.
