Bug In Bitcoin Core Still A Threat Despite The Released Patch!

The Bitcoin Core team highlighted on Reddit the other day that all users running a Bitcoin node should upgrade to the latest patched version to protect against a recently discovered vulnerability. The reason for this is that many nodes have not yet been updated and a possible attack may cause a chain split.

The resulting vulnerability may close many nodes in the network, causing a 51% attack, and if this scenario is successful, Bitcoin Manipulations of unprecedented magnitude could negatively impact the leading cryptocurrency:

@peterkodd:

“The most dangerous time of recent DoS vulnerability in Bitcoin is not before the patch, but during the creation of the patch…

Why? Because we have multiple implementations with different behaviors and thus potential chain splits.

100% DoS crash is safer than all!”

Essentially if only some of the nodes are secure and an attack occurs (still likely to happen). very low, but not impossible) there will be two different versions of the blockchain with different histories, indicating a chain split. . One thing is for sure, this situation will have a negative impact on Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market…

If you are running a node and you haven’t patched it yet, now might be the time to think about it!
