Amazon Registers New Cryptocurrency Domains

Judging by the public online records, e-commerce giant Amazon has registered 3 new domains linked to cryptocurrencies.

According to data from the domain inquiry site

Whois Lookup, 31 3 new web addresses registered by Amazon in October. The addresses of the sites can be listed as “amazoncryptocurrencies.com,” “amazoncryptocurrency.com” and “amazonethereum.com”. Domain names are registered as Amazon Technologies Inc.. This company is a subsidiary of Amazon.com and is known to have previously filed patent applications on behalf of Amazon.

The phone numbers given in the records belong to a department that handles the official business of Amazon.. However, people who noticed these records could not reach any representative when they called the number.. The first site to report the registrations is DomainNameWire, which is related to the domain name industry.

For now, it is not known exactly what the registered websites will serve.. According to a report on DomainNameWire, these domain names may have been taken for protection only.. Amazon also registered the domain name “amazonbitcoin.com” in 2013. However, users are redirected back to amazon.com when they try to access the link since then.. This makes DomainNameWire’s theory quite strong.

Alternatively, Amazon may be trying to ensure that other cryptocurrencies are not confused with Amazon Coin.. Amazon Coin is also a virtual currency issued in 2013 to provide customers with another online payment method.

Amazon representatives, who were asked to comment on the subject, did not provide any response.
